Who Was Sangat Sana, and Who Killed Him 12 Years Ago?

Sangat Sana, a member of the central committee of the Baloch Republican Party (BRP) and former chairman of the Baloch Student Organization (BSO-Azad), was abducted from the Kolpur area in Bolan on December 8, 2008. His body was discovered on February 13, 2012 in Murgab, Turbat. In addition to signs of torture, he had sustained 28 bullet wounds to his chest and head, indicating that an entire AK-47 magazine had been emptied on him. Sana had also previously served as the chairman of Baloch Student Organization (BSO-Azad). The BRP advocates for a separate homeland for the Baloch people due to the perceived failure of Pakistan in governing Balochistan, and it is estimated that approximately 50,000 people have gone missing in the region as of 2024.

Zarmine, Sangat Sana's sister, mentioned in an interview that her brother, a member of the Baloch Republican Party (BRP) who fought for equal rights for the Baloch people, was killed as retaliation for the humiliation suffered by the Pakistan army in February 2012. This humiliation occurred when Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International representatives testified before the Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee on Oversight and Investigations at the United States Congress, shedding light on the grave violations committed by Pakistan's security forces in Balochistan.

The message behind Sana's killing was clear, as it took place just a week after the hearing before the U.S. Congress on February 13, 2012. On February 10, 2012, both of Sana's sisters informed the international media that they suspected the army's intelligence agencies, namely the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the military intelligence, to be responsible for Sangat Sana's abduction in December 2008.

Yesterday marked the 12th anniversary of Sangat Sana's martyrdom, and nothing has changed in the province. Abductions and killings continue to occur on a daily basis in the Pakhtun and Baloch regions.
